Heat, sweat, UV rays: why your hair falls out more in summer ? (and how to save it)

With the return of sunny days, we tend to think that the sun is good for our morale... and our hair. We imagine it grows faster, gets beautiful highlights, and can finally breathe. Yet, behind the scenes, reality is quite different. Summer is actually one of the most grueling seasons for our scalp. If you notice your brush filling up faster than usual between July and August, rest assured: this phenomenon is very common, but you shouldn't let it settle in.

To understand what is at stake and protect your hair, here is an unfiltered breakdown of summer aggressions.

Thermal stress: when heat alters the hair structure

Unlike our skin, which constantly regenerates, hair is a biologically inactive material. Once the hair fiber emerges from the follicle, it can no longer self-repair. Therefore, the damage it suffers accumulates irreversibly over the weeks.

At the heart of this problem is the cuticle. This is the outer envelope of the hair, composed of small overlapping scales that protect the internal cortex, which is rich in keratin. During heatwaves, this thermal barrier is put to a severe test. As soon as the temperature rises, the hair fiber undergoes progressive dehydration. The scales lift, clash, and crack. The result? The hair loses its flexibility, becomes porous, rough, and eventually breaks.

Sweat, chlorine, and salt: suffocating the roots

The sun is not the only culprit. Summer comes with more abundant sweating. By accumulating on the scalp, sweat disrupts the skin's balance, which can cause irritation or itching.

Added to this is the ritual of swimming. Chlorine from pools and salt from the sea act as real strippers. They eliminate the natural sebum (the hydrolipid film) that naturally protects your head. Deprived of this protection, the scalp dries out, and residues end up clogging the hair follicles. Suffocated and damaged roots produce weaker hair, which greatly promotes hair loss.

The trap of early seasonal change

There is also an underlying biological factor. Prolonged exposure to summer light stimulates the production of certain hormones, like melatonin, which dictate our hair's life cycle. For many people, this variation in light kickstarts the process and accelerates the hair cycle. Hair thus enters its end-of-life phase (the telogen phase) more quickly.

This is why the famous "autumn shedding" actually starts developing right in the middle of summer, under the combined effect of UV rays and biology.

Why stopping your anti-hair loss routine in summer is a huge mistake

The classic vacation trap consists of slacking off on your efforts. We go on trips, lighten our toiletry bags, and set aside our treatments. Yet, this is the worst time to take a break.

Since the scalp undergoes maximum thermal stress, its needs are increased to maintain root anchorage. Interrupting your HACT routine in July or August is the equivalent of leaving your hair follicles defenseless against the heatwave. Continuing your shampoo, serum, and the use of your dermastamp throughout the summer is vital to protect microcirculation, limit invisible damage, and, above all, prepare for the post-vacation season to avoid massive volume loss in September.

4 simple steps to integrate today

To get through summer without losing your hair density, a few common-sense habits make all the difference:

  • Wear a hat or a cap to block UV rays

  • Rinse after swimming to eliminate salt and chlorine

  • Massage at night to stimulate growth and relax

  • Continue your HACT routine daily, even on vacation

By taking care of your roots from the inside out, you allow your hair to experience a peaceful summer and keep all its strength for the months to come.
