Postpartum hair loss: why do we lose our hair after giving birth?

Many women notice significant hair loss in the months following childbirth. Hair in the brush, in the shower, on the pillow. There's a feeling of losing a lot of it.

This situation may seem alarming, but it's perfectly normal. Postpartum hair loss is a very common phenomenon linked to the hormonal changes that occur during and after pregnancy.
Let us explain why.

During pregnancy: healthier hair

During pregnancy, the body produces much more estrogen, female hormones essential for the proper functioning of the hair cycle.

This hormonal surge has a direct effect on the hair cycle. Estrogens prolong the anagen phase, that is, the hair growth phase. As a result, hair remains in the growth phase longer and falls out much less.

This is why it is often said that pregnant women have particularly beautiful hair during this period.

Estrogens also stimulate the activity of hair follicles, but the main effect remains the prolongation of the growth phase.

After childbirth: a sudden hormonal drop

After childbirth, the body gradually exits the state of pregnancy and estrogen levels drop rapidly.

This hormonal drop disrupts the hair cycle. Many hairs that remained in the growth phase during pregnancy suddenly enter the telogen phase, the resting and shedding phase.

This phenomenon is called postpartum telogen effluvium.

Furthermore, a woman's daily life changes during the postpartum period: fatigue, stress, lack of sleep, and sometimes nutritional deficiencies after pregnancy. All these factors can exacerbate weight loss during this time.

How can this be remedied?

The good news is that this hair loss is temporary. The hair cycle naturally rebalances itself and regrowth gradually begins.

The most important thing is to help the body regain its balance:

• Try to reduce stress as much as possible
• to get the best possible sleep, even if it's not always easy
• Eat a rich and balanced diet to provide the nutrients necessary for hair growth
• Opt for gentle scalp care during this transitional phase

Over time, the hair loss gradually decreases and the hair resumes its normal cycle.

Important note: If you are postpartum and breastfeeding, be cautious with hair loss treatments. Some active ingredients or supplements may not be compatible with breastfeeding. It is therefore best to consult a healthcare professional before starting any treatment.
